Interview With Wendy Lichtman: Part 2 Geometry Through Quilting

Geometry through quilting all started with one of Wendy’s students desperately needing help with geometry. So she started teaching hands-on geometry, showing her students how you can use this to learn math with all the measurements and ratios needed to make a quilt. With each quilt, turning quilting into living geometry, showing the common threads between math and quilts.

This works because Wendy has her students plot out their quilts on graphing paper to learn the mathematical concepts and formulas for each shape to put the pieces together. She would show her students the parallel lines and how each shape needs a 90 degree right angle between the different shapes they would cut out.

They don’t just use quilts as a smart way to learn math, but they also donate the quilts to support local children’s hospitals. Each quilt puts two threads together to make a living piece of geometry.
